About Willy
For Willy Santiago, that life-changing moment came in 2013.
Born in Cuba, Willy had always loved dogs, but everything changed when he purchased an Italian Greyhound puppy that was meant to be a gift. He simply couldn’t part with her. A few days later, friends invited him to his first dog show, opening the door to a world that would soon become his career.
Today, Willy is recognized as one of Latin America’s leading professional handlers. Without a family background in the sport, he built his reputation through determination, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to learning. Every success has been earned through hard work, long hours, and genuine respect for the dogs in his care.
Dog shows have taken him around the world, allowing him to build lifelong friendships and experience unforgettable cultures. Among his favorite events are the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and the Royal Canin Cup, while Chile and Mexico remain the two places that feel most like home.
His career highlights include victories at the World Dog Show Croatia 2024, the Afghan Hound National Specialty, and a memorable Westminster win in 2026 under respected judge Michael Canalizo. Yet, for Willy, the greatest rewards have never been the trophies but the relationships formed throughout the journey.
No partnership reflects that more than his bond with Zaida, the Afghan Hound he affectionately calls his “one and only.” Originally sent to complete her American Championship before returning to Chile, Zaida instead became Willy’s closest teammate. Together, they have shared countless victories, challenges, and miles on the road, building a partnership founded on complete trust.
Away from the ring, Willy is known as humble, energetic, and always ready to enjoy time with friends and his dogs. His personal style mirrors his approach to handling—classic, elegant, and understated. A fan of Hugo Boss, he believes professionalism comes from confidence and authenticity rather than seeking attention.
The words that continue to guide him are simple but powerful: The best is yet to come. Die with your boots on. If I lose, I lose to the best. If I win, I beat the best. My God, let it be according to Your will.
His advice to the next generation is equally straightforward: “Do everything with passion. Give it your whole heart, and never stop dreaming.”
Being selected for the inaugural Handler Chic Founding Class is an honor he deeply appreciates. For Willy, the project is about far more than fashion—it celebrates the dedication, artistry, and professionalism behind the people who present purebred dogs at the highest level.
From a young man in Cuba who couldn’t give away a puppy, to standing beneath the lights of Westminster with one of the world’s most elegant breeds, Willy Santiago’s journey proves that the most extraordinary careers often begin with one unexpected decision—and that, as he likes to say, the best is still yet to come.
